The rules for the league consist of locally accepted FIFA amendments for amateur play along with the following:
- Coed: The game is "forced" coed in that the number of male players on the field may never exceed six (6).
- Age: The league is men over-30 and women over-21. A male goalie (playing only in that position) may be 25 or older.
- Players that are near the age limits should be prepared to present a driver's license for proof of age. Team captains are responsible for managing to the age rules. A captain from another team may inquire directly or through the referee about ages of opposing players and ask that proof be shown.
- The league is Coed Recreational; excessive aggression and/or forceful play will not be tolerated. Each captain should advise all players that such conduct and other forms of poor sportsmanship will result in expulsion from the league for the current season or longer as deemed appropriate by the advisory board. Slide tackling will NOT be allowed - violent or persistent neglect of this rule will result in ejection from the game or expulsion from the league. The goalie may slide (not tackle) to acquire the ball in their own penalty area.
- Home team captains (or a designate) are encouraged to email game results to compile standings.
- Referees: USSF qualified, one referee per game, no linespeople (unless referee chooses to solicit assistants and share game earnings or asks for "club" assistance). It is imperative that the efforts of the referees are respected. They are encouraged to use Yellow and Red cards and report such events and other unsportsmanlike conduct (including fans or spectators) to the advisory board. The referee's decisions must be respected; calls such as offside are the judgment of the referee ONLY - they may remind or caution players calling for offside or dissenting about this or any other rulings.
- A player is required to sub out for at least 2 minutes if they receive a yellow card. Keeping track of the required 2 minutes out is on the honor system. The ref will not keep track of this.
- During June and July, the early game must begin promptly at 5:45 PM. The games will consist of two 40 minute halves with a 5 minute half-time period. The first game must be stopped 5 minutes before the scheduled start time of the second game to allow for changeover and a timely start of the second game. A late start of the first game (e.g. waiting for players to arrive) still must result in ending the game on time - shortened game time - so the second game can start on time.
- The rules for the goalie and goal area are normal FIFA laws; open goal area (by the offense) and the goalie may not handle the ball on a pass or throw-in from her/his own team. The other 1999 FIFA rule change allows the goalie to hold the ball for 6 seconds instead of the former "number of steps" rule.
- Open, on-the-fly substitution is allowed (as long as it does not create an advantage in position on the field), without acknowledgement from the referee. Goalie changes must be reported to the referee.
- Once a player has joined and played with one team during the season, they may NOT switch to another team unless both captains from the involved teams agree to the change. A player may not play for more than one team except for the special circumstance when another team has less than 11 players and the opposing captain agrees to the "guest" players' participation.
- All players MUST wear shinguards - the referees and team captains have the responsibility to ensure that their players and players on opposing teams DO NOT PLAY without them.
- The home team is responsible for supplying an appropriate game ball and corner flags (should be stored in a container near the field).
- Teams should ensure that all players wear uniforms of the same design and color. Certain teams will need to carry alternate colors for games in which they are the home team and the opposing color is too close to their own (e.g. Maroon vs. Red, Light Blue vs. Dark Blue).
- According to FIFA rules, any player with an open wound/exposed blood must leave the field of play and have it covered before returning. Again, this is the responsibility of each individual player but should be enforced by the referee and team captains.
